In 1990 the company was acquired by Kmart and five years later, The Sports Authority had expanded to more than 100 stores, and was spun-off from Kmart. At the time of its merger with Gart Sports Company, The Sports Authority was the largest full-line sporting goods retailer in the US, and had 205 sporting goods stores in 33 states. In addition, a joint venture operates more than 50 sport stores in Japan.
